Refineries
Liquid energy sources and raw materials are of considerable importance today
Germany is the largest mineral oil market in the EU and also has the largest refinery production with 101 million tonnes. Moreover, mineral oil is still the most important energy source in Germany with a consumption share of 33%. Even with declining demand, mineral oil is expected to retain its central importance in the German energy mix in the future. The federal government's current energy forecast supports this assessment and sees the mineral oil share at 31% in 2030.
German refineries are of great economic importance. This applies to employment and value creation as well as to security of supply and interdependence with the chemical industry. In terms of energy efficiency and environmental protection investments, German refineries occupy a leading position in an international comparison. In order for refineries to continue to make this important contribution, they must be fit for the future. A policy oriented towards energy efficiency and climate protection must see refineries as an integral part of the energy mix of the future. The political framework conditions in Germany and the EU must ensure the competitiveness of refineries.
Liquid energy sources and raw materials are easy to store and transport. Their chemical properties make them very versatile. They therefore form the basis for important industrial value chains in Germany.
